Industry Report: Private Equity & Alternative Assets

Date: March 31, 2026

Subject: Liquidity Shifts, Take Private Trend, and the "Substance over Structure" Regime

I. The Macro Shift: From Financial Engineering to Operational Substance

The private equity landscape in early 2026 is defined by a fundamental pivot. While initial optimism buoyed the start of the year, the divide between top-tier performers and those dependent on multiple expansion has widened significantly.

II. Flagship Fundraises & Mega-Vehicle Closures

Capital continues to consolidate within "super-major" platforms and specialized strategies:

  • Blackstone Life Sciences: Successfully raised a record $6.3bn vehicle, hitting its hard cap and exceeding its predecessor by 40%. The firm now manages approximately $15bn in life sciences assets.

  • Ares Management: Secured $9.8bn for its flagship opportunistic credit strategy, including $8.3bn for Special Opportunities Fund III.

  • Inflexion: Closed Buyout Fund VII at a $4.9bn (€4.58bn) hard cap in just six months, targeting high-growth majority stakes in Northern Europe.

  • 17Capital: Raised a record $7.5bn NAV fund, highlighting the surging demand for net asset value lending as GPs seek flexible capital for portfolio expansion and DPI (Distributed to Paid-In capital) acceleration.

III. Strategic M&A and Take-Private Momentum

  • The Recordati Buyout: CVC Capital Partners has proposed a $12.6bn (€11.7bn) offer to take Italian pharmaceutical giant Recordati private at €52 per share. CVC currently holds a 46.8% stake.

  • Wealth Management Consolidation: Carlyle has acquired a majority stake in MAI in a deal valued at $2.8bn, with Harvest Partners and Oak Hill Capital exiting their positions.

  • Public-to-Private Speculation: Advent and Cinven are evaluating a sale or IPO for TK Elevator, amid rumors of a potential merger with KONE to create the world’s largest lift manufacturer.

IV. Real Estate & Infrastructure Dispositions

  • Spanish Multifamily: Blackstone executed the largest Spanish residential transaction since the Great Financial Crisis, selling a 5,000-unit portfolio to Brookfield for $1.4bn (€1.05bn net).

  • Hospitality Exit: Starwood Capital disposed of the Radisson Blu Hotel in London’s Leicester Square, a freehold asset in a district attracting 2.5m weekly visitors.

  • Infrastructure Leadership: CVC DIF appointed Enrico Del Prete (formerly of I Squared Capital) to scale its $25bn value-add infrastructure platform.

V. Private Credit & Distressed Opportunities

  • Secondary Credit Markets: Permira is targeting discounted European software loans, betting that AI-related market fears have caused an over-correction in technology debt valuations.

  • Continuation Vehicles: Ares led a $1.7bn continuation fund for Antares, acquiring a portfolio of 300+ first-lien floating-rate loans to provide liquidity to legacy LPs.

  • Financing Pushback: J.P. Morgan is navigating investor resistance on a $7.2bn financing package for Sealed Air Corporation (CD&R), with LPs raising concerns over spin-off provisions.

VI. Venture & Growth Equity

  • Quantum Computing: BlackRock backed a $57m bridge round for Finnish firm IQM (reporting $35m in annual revenue) ahead of a projected $1.8bn IPO.

  • Governance Shifts: Advent International secured a 10% stake in Natura for approximately $1.86/share, gaining two board seats as part of a major governance overhaul.

IGA Capital Commentary

As the "April 6" geopolitical deadline looms and energy prices threaten margins, IGA Capital anticipates that GPs will increasingly prioritize cash distributions over aggressive new entries in the second half of 2026.
