The U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) has announced a significant investment in TechMet Limited's Phalaborwa Rare Earths Project in South Africa. The initiative aims to reprocess gypsum wastes from legacy mining activities to extract rare earth oxides, crucial for electric vehicle batteries and clean energy technologies. DFC will invest up to $50 million in equity, contributing to the project's estimated $317 million total funding requirement.

TechMet, an Irish private company, focuses on mining and processing critical minerals. This project is expected to bolster South Africa's production and export of rare earth oxides, stimulate local employment, and enhance economic development through contracts with local suppliers and tax revenues.

The project will undergo an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to address potential environmental and social impacts, including water and energy use, contamination risks, and community impacts such as noise and traffic. The EIA will ensure compliance with International Finance Corporation (IFC) Performance Standards and develop mitigation measures as needed.

The Phalaborwa Rare Earths Project represents a strategic effort to increase global supply of critical minerals while supporting South Africa's economic growth and clean energy transition.
